Blackjack or 21 is the most popular casino game. One of the biggest reasons for its popularity is it’s a simple contest between the player and the dealer.
Object of the Game
The object of 21 is to beat the dealer by drawing cards that add up to 21, or as close to 21 as possible without exceeding that number. The Jack, Queen and King count as 10 and the Ace counts as 1 or 11, whichever you prefer. All other cards count at their face value. The dealer starts the game by dealing two cards to each player. He also deals one card to himself, face up.
Once cards are received, the player can either “stand” (i.e., draw no more cards) or tell the dealer to “hit' him/her (i.e., deal one or more cards until the player feels that the total hand count is closer to 21 than the cards the dealer has drawn). Hand signals are to be used to tell the dealer whether the player wants to “stand” or be “hit'. Stand is indicated by the player keeping his/her hand palm down in the air over the cards. Hit is indicated by the player motioning hands towards him/her, palm down over the cards.
If the player draws cards exceeding 21, he/she “busts' and loses, even if the dealer also 'busts”. If the player’s count is closer to 21 than the dealer’s count, the player wins. If the player’s count is the same as the dealer’s, it’s a “tie” or “push', so nobody wins. If the player’s first two cards total 21 exactly, it is a Blackjack (any 10 or face card with an Ace) and the player wins one-and-a-half times the money bet. However, if the dealer also Blackjacks on his first two cards, it’s a tie, so nobody wins. The player can draw as many cards as he/she likes, but the dealer must draw two cards totaling 16 or less and must stand on 17 or more.
Betting Terminology
Insurance: Side bet up to half the initial bet against the dealer having a natural 21-allowed only when the dealer’s showing card is an Ace. If the dealer draws a 10 and makes a Blackjack, insurance pays at 2-1 odds, but loses if the dealer does not.
Double Down: Double the initial bet following the initial two-card deal, but the player can hit one card only. (A good bet if the player is in a strong situation).
Split Hand: Split the initial two-card hand into two and play them separately – allowed only when the first two cards are of equal value. Use each card as the start to a separate hand and place a second bet equal to the first.
Even Money: When cashing in, the player is immediately at a 1:1 payout ratio when he/she is dealt a natural Blackjack and the dealer’s showing card is an Ace.
Hard Hand: A hand without an Ace or with an Ace valued at 1 is said to be Hard, so it can only be given one value.
Soft Hand: A hand that contains an Ace counted as 11 is called a Soft Hand.
Three Card Poker
Pair Plus:
When a player bets the pair plus spot on his/her own hand. If the hand contains a pair or better, the player wins! It’s just the player and the cards.
Ante:
When a player bets on the Ante spot to play against the dealer’s hand. It’s just the player and the dealer! If the player bets on the Ante spot and likes the hand, he/she must place a wager on the Play spot that is equal to the Ante. It’s the player’s 3 card poker hand against the dealer’s 3 card poker hand. Best hand wins!
Both (Pair Plus & Ante):
When it’s the player and the cards for a pair or better and the player and the dealer for the best 3 card poker hand. The player must also make the Play wager or he/she will forfeit the Ante and Pair Plus wagers.
Ante Bonus:
When a player makes the Ante and Play wagers to win a bonus payout even if the dealer doesn’t qualify, and even if the dealer’s hand beats the player’s hand.
